Kids & Classical MusicEarly exposure to classical music and the magic of the symphony orchestras has so many benefits for children. Appreciation for music, and specifically a variety of different music styles, is something you want to instill early in a child’s life.
Many symphony orchestras have wonderful kid-focused websites. Here are a few to check out while you're staying home. Some have musical composition games and activities that teach about different orchestral instruments: San Francisco Symphony Orchestra Kids at www.sfskids.org Dallas Symphony Orchestra Kids: www.dsokids.com New York Philharmonic Kids Zone: www.nyphilkids.org

One way to extend learning is through the use of music apps for kids! It can be overwhelming to try and figure out which ones are reliable and educational. Don’t worry – Kindermusik has compiled a short list of some of their favorites. Remember – screen time can be beneficial when monitored. Graphic Notation![]() Graphic notation is a term that refers to any written or visual music system that uses symbols other than traditional music notes and rests to represent sounds and silence. In Kindermusik, graphic and traditional notation, and symbolic awareness that happens with storytelling and pretend play reinforces overall symbolic recognition and awareness adding to pre-literacy skills and language acquisition skills. Check out the button above for an example: Pianist Stephen Malinowski plays Beethoven while showing conventional musical scores alongside graphic notation. While we are not meeting in person, you can encourage symbolic recognition and awareness by creating art to represent the music that your child hears. The second button above includes a link to an activity idea: Put your favorite music on and draw pictures together to represent what you hear. Ask your child to talk about each creation, including color choices. Have fun! We miss you all! Handprint Flowers CraftA fun Spring craft to brighten this rainy day!
