Music & MathNo one understands your little one better than you! After all, you know what your child likes to eat and how (while standing up, with foods not touching one another, and with everything on a special plate…), the best way to entice a full belly laugh, and the difference between the “I’m hurt” cry and the “I’m really tired” cry. But did you know that your little one is already a budding mathematician? It’s true!
Learning about the building blocks of math—such as size, measurement, pattern recognition, and counting by rote—starts early. Here are some suggestions for incorporating math into your day today! Give your child a medium-sized container like a cloth bin, a basket, or even an empty diaper box. Provide toys or toddler-safe objects for him to put in and then dump out of the container (over and over again). This kind of play allows your child to explore the basic math concepts of size, measurement, and capacity. Also, we've included a link below to a free resource from Kindermusik. This Kindermusik e-book--Music and…Math—includes musical activities to do together as a family. Have fun being together and learning at the same time!
