5 Ways Unstructured Play Boosts Learning (Plus Tips-By-Age Guide!)

Picture
Sharing the most recent Kindermusik - Minds on Music blog post via our own blog to highlight reasons why unstructured play boosts learning in children of all ages. Read more to explore questions like why is unstructured play important, what does unstructured play look like at different ages, and more. The most important thing to remember that even if you feel like you're not being hands-on letting them play in an unstructured setting, in fact, you are being hands-on by implementing a safe environment for them to explore their freedom and assert their preferences and creativity. Within the article, you'll also find the streaming capability of Kindermusik’s rhythmic chant, “Ev’rything Is Just Fine” for some daily motivation and inspiration.

Jump Rope Songs

Jump Rope Songs

Picture
A classic childhood activity that often incorporates song and rhyme to keep the necessary rhythm is jumping rope. Jumping rope gets kids moving during playtime and helps children practice keeping the cadence of a song or rhyme by saying them along to the movement of the rope. Jump ropes are a great tool that not only encourage a healthy, active lifestyle, but help children translate learned skills from playtime to playing instruments/singing songs as they grow up! They also help children develop hand, eye, and feet coordination, as well as learn new gross motor patterns that boost cognitive function. Remember - children learn best when they're having fun and they're usually having fun when they're moving! We've compiled a few classic and modern jump rope rhymes for families to use this Summer while getting outside, getting active, and staying musical! Check out the YouTube link below to hear what a jump rope song usually sounds like.

Jump Rope, Jump Rope from Super Simple Songs
Start with Down in the Valley as it begins with the rope being swung along the ground back and forth rather than overhead. Great for first time and/or younger rope jumpers!

Down in the valley
Where the green grass grows,
There sat Janey
Sweet as a rose.
Along came Johnny
And kissed her on the cheek.
How many kisses
Did she get this week?
1, 2, 3, 4, 5...

One of the most well-known and popular jump rope songs is Cinderella. It is wonderful for practicing counting too! For an extra challenge or older kids have them count by twos, threes, fives, or tens.

Cinderella, dressed in yellow
Went upstairs to kiss her fellow
Made a mistake
And kissed a snake
How many doctors
Did it take?
1, 2, 3, 4, 5...

For extra movements and adding creativity to jumping rope, try Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear!

“Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, show your shoe,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, that will do!
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, go upstairs,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, say your prayers,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn out the lights,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, say goodnight!”

Work on alphabet skills with A, B, C and Vegetable Soup!

A, B, C and vegetable goop.
What will I find in my alphabet soup?
A, B, C. . . . . . . .
(When you miss, make up something that starts with the letter you missed on.)

Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum is a well-known go to. Encourage silliness and vocalization with the descriptive words in this rhyme.

Bubble gum, bubble gum, chew and blow,
Bubble gum, bubble gum, scrape your toe,
Bubble gum, bubble gum, tastes so sweet,
Get that bubble gum off your feet!

Learn the months of the year and/or review their order with Windy Windy Weather.

Windy, windy weather,
All in together,
January, February . . ..
Windy, windy weather,
They all run out together,
January, February . . . . .
